An 18-year-old Loyola student reported being sexually assaulted Saturday near Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, according to Campus Safety.
Officer Michelle Tannehill of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) said the victim met an unknown offender from a dating app at the 6700 block of N. Sheridan Road.
Tannehill said the offender and victim met at a bookstore and then went to a movie theater where the female was sexually assaulted. The victim was forced to perform oral sex on the offender, according to Tannehill.
The exact location of both the bookstore and movie theater was not reported, according to Tannehill.
This is the first sexual assault case The Phoenix has reported since the semester started in August.
The Phoenix reported three cases of sexual assault on or near campus last academic year. The incidents occurred last September at Simpson Living Learning Center, in February a block from campus and in April at Santa Clara Hall.
Campus Safety didn’t send a crime alert to the Loyola community after the assault.
Campus Safety operates under the Clery Act, a law requiring universities participating in financial aid programs to maintain transparency with the student body by reporting crime statistics and security information, according to the U.S Federal Student Aid Office.
When a crime covered by the Clery Act occurs on or around campus, campus police officials are required to assess if there is an imminent threat to the community in order to determine if a warning needs to be sent to staff and students, according to the Clery Center’s website.
Authorities are still investigating. If anyone has information relating to the incident call Campus Safety at 773-508-6039 or CPD at 312-744-8263.
