A 21-year-old Loyola student told police he believed he was drugged and sexually assaulted last weekend blocks south of Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus, authorities said.
Police said the assault took place on the 1000 block of West Granville Avenue around 1 a.m. Oct. 12. That’s near the Sovereign apartment complex and Metropolis Coffee Company, which many Loyola students frequent, but it’s unclear where exactly the assault happened.
Because the investigation is ongoing, further information — including the victim’s reasoning for believing he was drugged — couldn’t be released, Chicago Police Department (CPD) said. It’s unclear if the victim knew the perpetrator before the assault because only preliminary information was released.
The victim met with police at Northwestern Hospital and Area North detectives are investigating, police said.
Campus Safety Sgt. Tim Cunningham didn’t respond to request for comment, but university spokesperson Sarah Howell replied to The Phoenix’s email on his behalf.
“Campus Safety was notified about the investigation from CPD, and they then notified Title IX as the complainant is a student,” Howell sent in an email on behalf of Cunningham.
Loyola’s Title IX Office handles reports of gender-based misconduct involving people at Loyola, such as reports of sexual assault, sexual abuse and stalking, but deals with the cases internally without law enforcement unless a student wants to press criminal charges.
This year has seen its share of sexual assault reports, with three instances of sexual violence reported to Campus Safety since the beginning of this semester. Most recently, a Loyola student reported a sexual assault that occurred after meeting someone from a dating app in September.
Eight rapes were reported in on-campus residence halls in 2017, according to Campus Safety’s annual crime report.
Tim Love, Loyola’s interim Title IX deputy coordinator, and Mira Krivoshey, a sexual assault advocate and assistant director of health promotion at the Wellness Center, didn’t respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.
