A Loyola student was the survivor of a sexual assault in San Francisco Hall on Nov. 12, marking the second time in less than a month that a student reported being the victim of a sexual assault in an on-campus dorm.
The incident occurred between 1 and 2:30 a.m. in the Lake Shore Campus dorm, according to a Campus Safety crime log. The following day, the student reported the assault to Campus Safety just after 8:30 p.m.
Chief of Police and Director of Campus Safety Thomas Murray said once the student called Campus Safety on Nov. 13, officers facilitated the student’s transportation to the hospital before turning the case over to the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and notifying Loyola’s Title IX coordinator.
The CPD News Affairs Office wrote in an email to The Phoenix that the case is still being investigated. The offender is a white Hispanic male, according to News Affairs, but no one is custody at this time.
Campus Safety did not email a crime alert to the Loyola community regarding the report, but Murray said Campus Safety is working with university administrators to educate students about sexual assault.
This report came more than three weeks after a female student reported a sexual assault in Baumhart Hall, the dorm on the Water Tower Campus. That incident, which occurred between 11 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 10 a.m. on Oct. 22, was also referred to CPD, according to a Campus Safety crime report.
Including the latest incident, there have now been six sexual assaults reported by Loyola students this semester dating back to Aug. 26.
Illinois law defines sexual assault — also known as rape, in Illinois — as an act of sexual penetration that is committed under “force or threat of force,” or when a victim is unable to consent or younger than the age of 18.
